I want to kick Grace under the table. Sure, I may have kind of told her that I did something bad, but I’m not too eager to share those details with Colton. I love the way he sees me now: a little damaged, but innocent. Graceful. Poised. Not the kind of person who would drug someone at a party, accidentally kill them, and want to puke on my Stuart Weitzman boots just thinking about it two years later.

We’ve only known each other for a year, but the students on campus know we come as a package deal, like bad decisions and karma. She’s got a face for TV, all symmetrical features topped off with a pert cherub nose, and I wonder, darkly, how she’d look being interviewed for the morning news.
“We’re here with Grace Atkers, roommate of murdered 18-year-old senior Devan Nichols. Grace, why don’t you tell us the last time you saw Devan?”
Grace would come prepared with waterproof mascara, of course. She’d dab underneath her bottom lashes with a Kleenex, top lip quivering, red hair tied back in a messy braid. “It happened on October 13,” she’d say. “I remember because it was a Friday night.”

It’s a seedy place, all dark corners perfect for drug deals or a stolen makeout. The open wooden floor in the middle creaks in most places, and if you get on your hands and knees to look for a dropped earring you’ll probably splinter your palms. Brooke and I walk across it with our arms pressed close against each other. It’s still early, but the place is already packed.
Nerves tickle my skin and I glance over at Brooke. Her glass-blue eyes are wild, her tumbling blonde hair hastily tugged up into a messy bun. She’s ready, but all I feel is regret.
“Let’s just hurry up,” I say. “Madison should be here by now.”

I’ve only been to The Elliott twice, both times for an art class I took sophomore year, so I don’t have the layout of the building down. Add in the decorations, swarms of party guests, and rearranged furniture, and I have a hard time finding the bathrooms. After a few minutes of searching I head down a dimly lit hallway with black damask wallpaper, towards an elegant gold door at the end.
