Cryo Chamber's seventh entry in its ongoing Tomb series opens strongly with a pairing of Apocryphos & Pœna Sensus. Their track, The Sigh of Archaic Tragedy, is weighty and oppressive, built from deep drones, bass-heavy descending chords, and unstructured percussion that evokes places of burial and stillness. The rest of the album explores similar themes in different ways. The variety on this compilation is remarkable considering that each piece adheres to a common aesthetic framework.

Source: Burning Ambulance. The core of the Moscow Composers Orchestra is pianist Vladimir Miller. Born in the UK, he developed an interest in contemporary theater and performance art while a student, gradually drifting toward jazz and solo performance in the late ’80s. In the early ’90s, he began traveling to Eastern Europe to perform and form creative alliances with musicians there. Working together with Russian producer Nikolai Dmitriev, he assembled the MCO.

When, in the summer of 2020, Erstwhile Records founder Jon Abbey mentioned, on a phone call, that he wanted me to write something specifically about Keith Rowe’s series of releases for Erstwhile, initial euphoria was replaced by dread, by the weight of the history I was on the point of examining. It took me more than four years to pull my thoughts and observations together to form this text out of the admiration and respect I feel for both Rowe and Abbey, but as I entered the project’s lengthy gestation period, several sources proved invaluable.

Source: Burning Ambulance. Bill Dixon was born October 5, 1925 in Nantucket, Massachusetts. He spoke with a strong New England accent and a Yankee’s disdain for pretense. He said what he meant and did not suffer fools. Two years before his death, I interviewed him for The Wire. It turned out to be his last major interview, and the first thing he said to me after an exchange of greetings was, “Anything that I don’t want to discuss, I just won’t discuss.”

Congrats to Craig Taborn, one of this year’s Grantees. Craig Taborn is an improvising musician and composer creating singular soundscapes through a virtuosic command of piano and expansive knowledge of musical genres. In performances and recordings as a soloist, bandleader, and sideman, Taborn brings a fearless and sophisticated approach to music making. He draws from musical traditions as varied as traditional and contemporary jazz, contemporary classical, experimental, electronic, rock, metal, and hip-hop. His constant exploration of genre and style informs his own distinct musical intelligence and voice.
