Patch birder in East Devon around Seaton and the Axe Estuary. Moths, butterflies, dragonflies and blogging are passions for me too. Love spending my weekends exploring our beautiful countryside with my family, Jess and Harry.

Have been looking forward to seeing one of these in my moth trap, a nice garden first. Only immigrants were micros with 6 Rusty-dot Pearl, 6 Rush Veneer and an Olive-tree Pearl #teammoth

Don't you just hate it when a crappy record shot of distant migrating Grey Herons is ruined by a photobombing Bluefin Tuna!

A great day on patch, full details here: stevesbirdingblog.blogspot.com/2025/10/whoo... #ukbirding

Having earlier flown past West Bexington (per Mike Morse) there are six Whooper Swans currently on Colyford Marsh #ukbirding

This Caspian Gull is so big I think it's struggling to even get up! An absolute corker and is currently showing well on the lower Axe Estuary #ukbirding

My favourite variety of Caspian Gull on the Axe just now... the monster first-winter variety! Certainly different to any of yesterday's birds #ukbirding

Bit of wind has brought the gulls in again. 2 Caspian and 3 Yellow-legged Gull (ad and two 2nd/3rd winters) on the Axe Estuary this afternoon #ukbirding

With little wind and temps in double figures all night I put the trap out last night. A couple of expected NFG with the season change, but was surprised to see a few migrants still about with 8 Rusty-dot Pearl and singles of Rush Veener and White-point (latter new for garden) #teammoth

Beer Head was very birdy again this morning, and very hard to leave. Mipits and Chiffs made up the bulk, but good to see singles of Redstart, Lesser Whitethroat and Common Whitethroat #ukbirding

Contrary to popular belief I don't think all Wheatears are that approachable. I actually find the birds that arrive in early spring and the first wave in autumn to be quite nervy. However these brutes coming through now are a different breed - a true photographers dream and I love 'em! #ukbirding

South coast has been very quiet for anything from the east so far this autumn, and then this happens! What a bird! Blown my socks off, can only imagine what it must have done to whoever discovered it hanging in a mist net!

Yellow-browed Bunting trapped, ringed and released at the Swannery. It's flown to the hedge which runs alongside the Swannery grounds and the bird may be viewable from the permissive path heading west from Grove Lane.

Not much wind today so vismig mostly high and birds flying in all directions. Highlight for me were 2 Mistle Thrush west, but also good to see an increase in Skylark numbers. Plenty of Chiffs grounded again and a few more crests including 2 Firecrest #ukbirding

Went up to Axe Cliff with click counters and my sound recorder this morning but overhead passage very slow. However there had been an amazing fall of Chiffchaffs and chats, including 12 Stonechat, 3 Wheatear, 2 Redstart and a Whinchat. Also Golden Plover #ukbirding

Autumn is moving on with two Redpoll, Skylark and a Song Thrush over during a vismig session this morning. Also one Crossbill, good numbers of Siskin and Meadow Pipit and a few alba and Grey Wagtails #vismig #ukbirding

Black Hole Marsh this last hour was brilliant, just lacking the rare. Vocal Spotted Redshank new-in, plus 3 Ruff, 3 Curlew Sand, 2 Little Stint, Knot, Barwit and 5 Greenshank. #ukbirding

Lots more migration at Beer Head this morning. Not as frantic as yesterday with 450+ Mipits, 12 Siskin and 30+ Chiffchaff, but loads more hirundines (over 1,700 House Martins!). 3 Stonechat, 3 Snipe, 2 Yellow Wags and 1 Golden Plover also recorded, plus the Ibis-flock ofcourse :-) #ukbirding

9 Glossy Ibis east over the sea past Beer Head just now #ukbirding

We had one on the Axe last night, reckon that tagged on after the nine went past me.

Couldn't give Beer Head the time it deserved this morning. Felt like the flood gates had opened with 1000+ Meadow Pipits through, most landing, almost same amount of hirundines and 30+ Siskin. 50+ Chiffchaffs, 6 Wheatear grounded and huge highlight with a Quail flushed near Lookout! #ukbirding

At last, a Clay-like moth that's not a Clay! One White-speck amongst another good trapping of migrants (mostly micros) in my garden last night. Also this lovely Red Underwing. And thanks to those for pointing out my earlier typo :) #teammoth

Think thats do-able Amy. No other species would show such a clear grey mantle in first winter plumage on this date. Even a YLG would be patterned.

The Wryneck at Seaton Marshes is still present this morning, viewable from the hide (look north). It was present til dusk last night, with 2 Caspian and 1 Yellow-legged Gull also seen: stevesbirdingblog.blogspot.com/2025/09/wryn... #ukbirding

With overnight temps not dropping below 17c I was #teammoth last night for 1st time in 3 weeks. On a garden scale a mega arrival of migrants! 22 Box-tree, 21 Rusty-dot Pearl, 11 Rush Veneer, 3 Olive-tree Pearl, 3 Dark Sword Grass, and singles of Silver Y, Pearly Underwing, Clancy's Rustic and Vestal
