I really don't know why I'm focused on the homoeroticism when it's not ladies TBH. It just GETS me somehow. Saylam has a good analytical post about how the whole A Bao Qu fight scene is a metaphor for the loss of virginity. 😂

In the original 0079 novels, we do not have the adorable meetcute where Amuro's car gets stuck in the mud on Side 6, but it does happen in the Lalah novel. (I will read that one before I move onto the Zeta books!)

Yes, I think that the two of them scarring each other rather is a much better decision (and a more homoerotic one.) From what I understand Tomino has a later novel set in 0079 (Lalah's Secret Rendezvous) where he goes back and revises certain things. I'm not sure if that's one of them.
