One of the best things we can do for literacy is remove time constraints. Wanting children to read faster makes sense, but speed comes after basics.

We wouldn’t put a new driver into a Ferrari. First drivers learn rules, control, & confidence. Reading works the same way. Fluency comes from mastery.

The way we speak to people learning to read has an extremely significant impact. Even “you can do it” can frustrate someone when they clearly feel they can’t do it without extra assistance. Meet them where they’re at and watch them bloom!
