Bobigny’s brutalist Mairie by architects Marius Depont and Michel Holley. The Town Hall of Bobigny is a powerful example of French brutalist architecture, a bold statement in béton brut.

Palace of Culture and Science, from our hotel window, described when it was completed in 1955 as a ‘gift’ from the Soviet Union to the Polish people, however the locals described their gift somewhat differently, with the nickname ‘Stalin’s syringe’

Honour Eileen Gray, who wasn’t able to be an architect because she was a woman, she could design textiles instead. But she was a fabulous architect and Le Corbusier was deadly jealous see www.greyscape.com/cap-moderne-2/

Corbusier’s 1954 Mill Owners Association Building, Ahmedabad. Its beauty lies in its sense of volume, light and raw concrete surfaces. Corbusier’s five points are noted, it a seems to float, pilotis make an open ground floor. Corbusier used a favourite, ramps to connect floors image John Gollings ©

We have the original architect’s model of the De La Warr Pavilion, on display in our Sargent Gallery. Sadly a number of the proposed features didn’t make it into the final build for reasons of cost.

The fantastic and vibrant Center of Creative Arts, St Louis formerly the B’nai Amoona synagogue designed by Erich Mendlesohn whose De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill, you know we love. #modernism
Would Corbusier have been wriggling in his cinema seat at the sight of ‘Villa Arpel’ in Jacques Tati’s 1958 film Mon Oncle? Created on a set with production designer Eugène Roman, Tati lampooned a particular class of post war aspiring fellow Frenchmen. Photo with thanks to @gilbertkann
Beautifully put. That the Nazis hated modernism is all the persuasion one needs that it’s a force for good
Baba estate, Prague, like Wiesenhoff, experimental, aspirational, now loved
What makes us modernists? Rejection of tradition? Belief in progress and Utopianism? Embrace of technology? Minimalism, simplicity?
Do we need modernists now? #modernism #modernist #midmod #modernizm #nachkriegsmoderne
The Deutscher Werkbund’s Wiesenhof Estate, Stuttgart, 1927, a magnificent experiment to create affordable, decent housing for ordinary people. But instead of cheap prefabricated buildings they were costly. The Nazis loathed the modernism and said it looked like an Arab village - racists #modernism
The gifted and, sadly, late Zaha Hadid’s Port House, Antwerp. While preserving, respectfully, the original fires station Hadid added a bold addition that provides beautiful views of and from, every direction. #urban #urbanview #urbandesign #masterarchitect
