Although Barn Owls are often thought of as pure white, the feathers on their upper body form a beautiful tapestry of soft oranges, silvery greys and warm browns 🦉
From above, they are well camouflaged against rough grassland 🍂

Once young Barn Owls start venturing outside the nest place, at around 10 weeks old, “play-hunting” may involve pouncing on anything that moves (or doesn't in this case!). They receive little or no training and rely on instinct to master the art of hunting 🦉

Barn Owls do not enjoy the rain!! 🦉🌧
Their feathers are not very waterproof, flying with wet feathers takes more energy and silent flight is impossible.
Having somewhere warm and dry to shelter makes all the difference 🏠

A beautiful young female Barn Owl enjoying the evening sun 🦉🌤

She hasn’t left the nest site just yet, but soon she’ll set off to find a new home and, hopefully, raise many owlets of her own 🐣

Silver wasted no time settling in! She spent her first weekend exploring every corner & sunbathing on the roof of her new shelter 😎

We’re so grateful to Sharon for her love, care, & dedication to animals. Silver is in the best hands, & we’ll be here to support them both every step of the way ❤

✨ Check out Silver’s amazing new home! ✨

Her new foster carer, Sharon, has built an aviary tailored perfectly to Silver’s needs, with plenty of space to stretch her wings, a variety of perches, an internal shelter, and multiple roost boxes to choose from.

With relatively large wings and light bodies, Barn Owls glide slowly and hover with ease, pinpointing prey with remarkable precision 🦉✨🍃

Tawny Owl Dispute! 😮
Tawnies are known for being territorial, even
displacing Little Owls. These encounters often go unnoticed, hidden from our eyes. With trap cameras, we get to see more of their activity like this interaction between two Tawny Owls.
Sound on to hear the impact as they collide! 🔊🎯

If you ever find a ringed owl, you can report it to the BTO here: app.bto.org/euring/lang/...
Owls checked and ringed under licence. 🦉
barnowltrust.bsky.social
All were ringed and a quick health check performed to make sure they were feeding well. Ringing is an important part of our work and is where we learn so much about the owls, once they fledge. Only 1 in 3 Barn Owlets make it past their first year, a reminder of the challenges they face once fledged.

Three's a crowd! 🐥🐥🐥
Last week we checked the home grown owlets, in a nestbox on our reserve. With the recent dry weather, we were slightly hesitant about if they'd made it. Though only 3 of the 6 survived, this is more than many other nests this year, so we are thankful for small mercies.

Not all Tawny Owls nest where you’d expect! 🦉
Their favourite is a tree cavity 🌳
They also like nestboxes!
Sometimes they will use old bird nests, squirrel drays, or even rabbit holes! 🐇
Nesting in buildings however is unusual 🏠

We will continue to put food out for her in the coming weeks to take as needed. Go well little one!
Most Tawny Owlets are quickly returned to the wild if found on the ground, as the adults feed them post fledging. However, if in bad condition then a few do need long term care, like this youngster 🤕
