1/x A good question. "Is the anchor chain not attached to the ship?" YES, it is, and it also is the origin of the English expression (also in Dutch) "the bitter end" / "het bittere einde". The end of a chain is secured in the chain locker by a quick release mechanism known as "the bitter end."

I talked a few times about anchors. This is what happens when the brake on the winch doesn't work

Not certain it can be classified as shadow fleet. Flag and owner do not have that reputation. It could have been carrying Russian oil products that are sold under the price cap enforced by US/EU/Britain. But would Ukraine give a sh*t?

1/x As people on X were freaking out about a kite assisted ship (WOKE!!), I have another one: The rotor ship or Flettner ship. It uses large, spinning vertical cylinders called Flettner rotors to harness wind power and propel the vessel through the Magnus effect.

Pilots from around the world share photos of non-compliant pilot transfer arrangements. This one is of a level we call the "widow maker" set up. This is the sort of setup that killed US Sandy Hook pilot Dennis Sherwood in 2019. The shipping company should be ashamed.
