I recently had ChatGPT write a simple neural network using CUDA and ptx train on MNIST. Worked great but only had one layer. I asked it to write it with two layers... complete failure! I tried Google, and Claude, neither worked. How much do you want to bet most examples they trained on have 1 layer?

What is up with this? Chat GPT begins a response to my coding question with "Rock On"???

Is anyone willing to pay $5,000/month for their ChatGPT subscription? Models need to get smaller, or subscriptions need to curtail reasoning, or the AI companies need to move to a usage based pricing system. The AI companies are playing a game of chicken.

Clickbait is getting out of control. In my Youtube feed I see this, and I think, isn't that Natasha Lyonne? How could she possibly be homeless? Isn't her career going through a resurgence right now? Was she homeless at some point? Nope, it's about 4 people I've never heard of.

In my experience, LLMs are really good at writing short scripts, and one-off coding that you can use to automate a task you need to do. They can also be good at prototyping. The larger your project gets the less they understand. Eventually it stops working.

I don't understand the "AI is useless" perspective. Coding works great for short scripts, I use this all the time. It doesn't work well for large applications, and Cursor has only seemed to get worse at this. It comments and explains code well also.

New @edzitron.com podcast. Per the discussion, there is an easy way that OpenAI and all the others could completely end hallucinations but they will never do it because it would require them to pay all of the content providers they are currently stealing from.

One of the Moonshots guys brought up the question about the Crusoe datacenter that is being built in Texas right now. Crusoe is building the datacenter for Oracle, not OpenAI, but OpenAI is going to buy the compute from Oracle. Why is Oracle involved at all?

Whatever happened to the Nvidia DGX Spark? Nvidia advertised this "Mini AI Supercomputer" for $3K (later $4K) in March, release scheduled for July. Is there a new release date anywhere. Does anyone have any idea if this is still going to be released? Where is my petaflop supercomputer for $4K?

The argument here is that no one at OpenAI understands how people do their jobs. They believe VCs are running out of money. Almost all post 2005 startups lose money. Lots of interesting stuff in this. They sound a lot like Ed Zitron but less angry.

According to MLGW, the residential population of Memphis TN uses about 5,000 Gwh of electricity per year. Elon Musk is about to open a 1Gw datacenter in Memphis. That will consume about 9,000 Gwh of power / year. Where is that going to come from?

I'm able to run the 120b gpt-oss (4-bit quantized) model on a PC with two 16gb 4060s. It runs at 3 tokens/sec, but it runs better than 70b Llama 2 (2-bit quantized). I'm not sure if this is some sort of Mixture of Experts magic, but whatever it is, I think it is pretty exciting.

If SoftBank needs OpenAI as much as OpenAI needs SoftBank, the deadline for the deal with Microsoft may be extended... however, if Microsoft knows this as well, Microsoft could push beyond the deadline for a better deal. SB and OAI need MS, but MS does not need them.

Someone online mentioned that whenever you ask an AI to generate a clock, it always sets the time to 10:10. Out of curiosity, I asked ChatGPT to create an image of a clock and this is what I got. The one that is weird to me is even the digital clock showed 10:10.

Does anyone have any idea what an #aibubble popping would look like? In the .com crash there were public companies that should have never gone public that disappeared. There was a market crash. It is possible an AI bust may turn into a decade of stagnation, rather than a crash. Thoughts?

I've been having late 1990s flashbacks recently. I like the technology, but it feels like the hype is out of control.
This is the second "McKinsey is in trouble" piece I've seen today. Everybody's worried about the data center bubble. There is blood in the water.
Until recently, McKinsey was growing at a stunning pace. Yet after a phase of rapid expansion, its revenue growth in 2024 was a meagre 2%, according to estimates. What happened to the legendary consultancy?

I agree with DP almost point for point here. However, he failed to mention the possibility that progress drops off significantly because the bubble pops and investors could get spooked out of spending an insane amount of money on the AGI slot machine.

I don't understand the hate for #openai and #ai in general on blue sky. I've been listening to a lot of @edzitron.com recently, and he makes many good points, but his hatred is visceral. I can think the tech is interesting even if #OpenAI loses a crap ton of money and there is an obvious AI bubble.
