we've also learned, from the very start of
the covid pandemic, that most of us can easily
work from home, freeing ourselves from
a burdensome commute.
bbirdiman.bsky.social
and anyone willing to take a train rather than fly
should get that train-trip for free, to reward them
for that very considerable reduction of carbon.
bbirdiman.bsky.social
they paid anyway. that is the problem here.
bbirdiman.bsky.social
you're confusing this simple issue with complex ones.
bbirdiman.bsky.social
bigger issues are confusing you, but the issue here
is simple: seattle paid for rooms for the homeless,
but then let those rooms go vacant and unused.
bbirdiman.bsky.social
and that's before we even mention the irony of
saying "we won't help you because you're not
a local here" to people who are quite literally homeless.
bbirdiman.bsky.social
how about creating collective responsibility for
a collective problem? but immediately addressing
the basic needs of humans who are suffering from it?
bbirdiman.bsky.social
that's a little too "not my problem" for my taste.
it is also much too much like the current situation,
where housing is paid for, but not being used.
bbirdiman.bsky.social
anybody who is willing to take public transportation
should be rewarded for that valuable contribution.
society as a whole benefits greatly from that.
bbirdiman.bsky.social
so what would you suggest?
because right now seattle is paying huge amounts
to solve the problem and then actively refusing to
implement the solution.
bbirdiman.bsky.social
to begin, however, while we figure out this
great transportation recalibration, the first step
is to make all public transportation free.
immediately.

the worst are americans who feel they can ignore
this fundamental reality for 3 years out of every 4,
then boast about not voting for the lesser evil.
bbirdiman.bsky.social
unless someone doesn't like what they think you said.
bbirdiman.bsky.social
i say 2030 based on the 10-year onset-time
for aids after hiv infection. but ironically, 2030 is
when swiss re says that excess deaths will disappear.
bbirdiman.bsky.social
i see no excess deaths in 2023 and 2024 in the u.s.,
and surely not 2%. although this year might have some,
i expect the real jump will start in 2030.
bbirdiman.bsky.social
anecdotally, our rent continues to go up 10% yearly,
despite the fact that they have built several high-rent
apartment buildings a stone's throw away.
bbirdiman.bsky.social
masking is an intelligence test.
bbirdiman.bsky.social
now that the heat has settled, if you want me to
detail the massaging pew did in that report,
i'd be happy to. (it wasn't intentional, or purposeful.)
bbirdiman.bsky.social
so to return to my ongoing theme here:
although we'll need to greatly recalibrate
our "needs", transportation is a necessity,
and thus should be free.

i'm puzzled why bluesky can't play a 40-second clip.
bbirdiman.bsky.social
thanks for the update, jp.
bbirdiman.bsky.social
it's not a free market.
the fascists are buying up all the stalls
in an attempt to force folks to buy their
rotten vegetables and putrid spoiled meat.
bbirdiman.bsky.social
the "bunker" idea is designed to distract you from
noticing that billionaires own the cities you live in,
and will force you out whenever they decide.
bbirdiman.bsky.social
this is the least pleasure i ever get on bluesky.
i always regret trying to share my experience
(from the real world of renters) with yimby advocates.
bbirdiman.bsky.social
but understand that you don't have to
convince me that more housing will
lower the cost. i want the housing built
regardless! we need those units now!
