How can we evaluate GenAI as cultural technology?

#GenAI is cultural & social but most eval lean on technical benchmarks. In a new paper with 30+ researchers we introduce a framework that evaluates GenAI not only on performance, but on meaning

Our team’s research on how people interact with mental health chatbots is more about the people than the bots, researcher @briana-v.bsky.social‬ writes. datasociety.net/points/what-...
Text on an orange background with the title of the Points post,What Happens When People Turn to Chatbots for Therapy? by Briana Vecchione. It includes a quote from the brief: "Chatbots are reshaping not only how people seek help, but how they define it."

Through interviews with documentary photographers, it reveals enthusiasm for AI’s ability to support community-driven storytelling, alongside concerns about authenticity, trust, and the risk of misrepresentation.

My heart ached when I was reminded that Aaron Swartz was prosecuted for trying to make academic knowledge more accessible to the public. Meta, meanwhile, is doing it for their own bottom line. I'm going to guess that no one at Meta will be looking at spending 35 years in jail for this.
An image of Aaron Swartz with the following text: "Meta illegally downloaded 80+ TB of books from LibGen, Anna's Archive, and Z-library to train their AI models. In 2010, Aaron Swartz downloaded only 70 GBs of articles from JSTOR (0.0875% of Meta). Faced $1 million in fine and 35 years in jail. Took his own life in 2013.

The AI Summit ends in rupture. AI accelerationists want pure expansion—more capital, energy, private infrastructure, no guard rails. Public interest camp supports labor, sustainability, shared data. safety, and oversight. The gap never looked wider. AI is in its empire era.

I'm happy to be organizing this alongside my collaborators at Microsoft Research: Jenny Williams, Gonzalo Ramos, @katecrawford.bsky.social, and @qveraliao.bsky.social.

This event is supported by ISIR - Institut des Systèmes Intelligents et de Robotique, Sorbonne Université, CNRS, MSFT Research.

We're hearing a lot about AI at the moment but little about the agency that people have over these technologies.

This is the 4th episode of a series of salons where we discuss how we can shape AI and challenge dominant narratives through artistic practice.

Finally, we analyze the implicit narratives and impacts on the creative and artistic sectors.

We show that these narratives conveyed values about creative work, in particular:
🔹 automation over manual work
🔹 efficiency over exploration
🔹 concept over execution
🔹 artifact over process
🔹 short-term over long-term skills
bcaramiaux.bsky.social
AI is not neutral. AI narratives have long carried stereotypes and political agendas. It comes with stories, values, and perspectives that influence how we perceive artistic work.

➡️ Little research has examined how these narratives operate in the creative and artistic sectors.
