A wonderful workshop where I too contributed, this time on metaphors of the body politic in economic debates in colonial Virginia. Really enjoyed listening to the contributions of Tom, Rachel and others!

Last week I spoke on athleticism in seventeenth-century English political thought at "Republican Bodies" @imems.bsky.social (albeit online). This was a stimulating coming together (programme below!) including @beccapalmer99.bsky.social and @rhammersley99.bsky.social. I look forward to its future!

Today people went around my neighborhood in north east London spray painting St George’s crosses onto people’s homes. Many of these houses have non British people living in them.

This is getting very dark, very quick.

Had a great time @mhs1791.bsky.social yesterday examining the MA Baptist Church’s origins. Such an amazing archive that I’ve had to book another appointment! James Winchell’s 1820 history includes a familiar echo of the ongoing complex relationship with the founders at the top of the page…

Reading a newspaper from Boston in 1773, where a man is advertising his goods. He argues that people might be averse to him because he is a “Stranger” to the continent, but “if this be a Crime, the Blood of every American is yet tainted with Guilt.”

Seems very fitting in these current times!

Consider applying to this great conference. MA, PhD & Early Career scholars - we’d love to hear from you!

In the new issue of the JHI, Diego Pirillo considers the Atlantic Republic of Letters, with a particular focus on learned periodicals in early America: muse.jhu.edu/pub/56/artic...
A quote from the article: "Reading a periodical was an active rather than a passive pursuit: humanistically trained scholars read journals with pen in hand, making extensive annotations that were often shared with friends and colleagues and conceived for public rather than simply for private use."

Really looking forward to presenting at this conference next week! Such a great opportunity to discuss everything #GreekTraditionTwenty
