There's discussion around how to make player feel good (happy, powerful) in feel-good games. Not so much on how to make players feel bad (sad, angry) to make those good moments feel better by contrast. I'm talking about those intentional "bad" moments in game mechanics. Any good examples?

I've been thinking about a 4X game economy design in a new way thanks to Charlie Czerkawski's book. Economy is the gateway to content distribution, so with long-session games like 4X's there is not only the economy of the session, but also the economy of new content accessible in each playthrough.
