It's also noteworthy that the imagery originated in a time when most people needed to hunt to survive so it could also mean the animals are reminding human that they're also a part of the same cycle of life.
(I've also read that it's based on an Austrian folktale, but I never found which exact tale)

Animals carrying hunter's casket is a fairly popular imagery in art. Sometimes they're celebrating, sometimes it's something else. It could be saying that in the end, the hunter dies like the rest of them.
