I have 16 days until Legends Z-A launches. I have not done nearly enough work on my Gen 2 Living Dex. It’s time to lock in and get it done before Z-A’s out cuz otherwise it ain’t getting finished for a hot minute.

But Ditto don't have gender, so the 1/64 shiny odds applies to all of their offspring!

Also being a Ditto, I can breed it with any species of Pokémon that isn't a legendary.

So now I can shiny hunt any Pokémon in Gen 1 & 2 with 1/64 shiny odds rather than the base 1/8192 odds of Gen 1-5!

*For example, if I breed a shiny male Pidgeot, only the female Pidgey's that hatch from the eggs will have the increased 1/64 shiny odds.

**Effective 1/128 cuz it's 1/2 odds of being the opposite gender multiplied by the 1/64 shiny odds.

If you breed a shiny Pokemon in Gen 2, any offspring of the opposite sex to their shiny parent have a 1/64 chance of also being shiny* themselves, for a total of effectively 1/128 shiny odds**.

So now I've traded that Ditto over to Pokémon Crystal from Blue, it's shiny!

Having a shiny Ditto in Gen 2 isn't only cool because it's a shiny Ditto and that's very cool within itself, but also because of how breeding shiny Pokémon works in the Gen 2 games.

Remember those values I mentioned Ditto had copied? Usually that's temporary and only lasts the battle.

But catching a Ditto in this 'copy of a copy of a copy of a copy' state causes a glitch that makes those values permanent.

Including the values that determine whether or not a Pokémon is shiny.

Gyarados then transforms into Ditto who has transformed into Gyarados, giving me a Gyarados mimicking a Ditto mimicking a Gyarados.

Ditto then uses Transform again, making it now a Ditto mimicking a Gyarados mimicking a Ditto mimicking a Gyarados.

I deleted all of its moves except Bite and traded it to Pokémon Blue where I taught it Mimic. Mimic copies a move from another Pokémon, in this case, it copied Transform from a wild Ditto.

That wild Ditto then used Transform itself, copying my shiny Gyarados and the values that make it shiny.

Caught the static shiny Gyarados on the Lake of Rage in Pokemon Crystal last week. Not particularly exciting on its own since it's guaranteed, but it did allow me to do something pretty cool in Pokémon Blue.

I was a little under levelled and Jumpluff didn’t basically nothing but stall with Spore whilst I healed the rest of the team, but we did it. Here’s the final shiny only team for Pokémon HeartGold. Didn’t realise how pink it was until seeing this.
