My friend Oregon Representative Hoa Nguyen passed passed away today. She was a strong advocate for public education, especially for disadvantaged students struggling to stay in school. She will be missed.

For our #democracy, a reminder: if you work in law enforcement or the military, your duty is to the Constitution, not one man. We have many historical court rulings that it is illegal to follow an illegal order. Just ‘following orders’ is NOT a valid defense. #DemocracyMatters #DemocracyInAction

Current book I am reading. Actually, it’s not the true title. I will share that shortly. I was at an author event at Powell’s Books last month. An employee put that post it note on my book so the author would spell Brian correctly for signing it. I think it’s funny, so I kept the sticky note there.

For our #democracy, I just finished reading this Lincoln biography by Presidential Historian Jon Meacham. It’s good to read books about the Civil War and Lincoln to remind ourselves the U.S. went through awful times before and we prevailed. This book inspired me to try the Lincoln beard for a day.

Checking in with a few updates:

1.) Yesterday, Trump’s federal agents brutalized peaceful demonstrators at the SW Macadam ICE facility. It is egregious and a betrayal of American values. He is deliberately trying to provoke violence to tell a story about our city that is not based in reality.
