ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A recent review of the mental health policy and system for children in city schools highlights significant concerns. The report indicates a lack of testing to evaluate the effectiveness of mental health programs, inadequate consideration of teacher trauma, and warns that funding for these programs is either depleted or soon will be. Sara Taylor, co-chair of the mental health report, addressed the school board in December. “We know what the suicide rate is right now among Black and brown youth ages 10 to 19. Risen faster than any other populations. So this is about lives,” she said.

The International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) has spotlighted how Ohio firefighters, police officers and emergency medical workers are one step closer to receiving long-awaited mental health support after state lawmakers approved $40 million to activate the state Post-Traumatic Stress Fund.  The funding is part of House Bill 184, a comprehensive spending bill signed into law by Ohio Governor Mike DeWine.  The measure will allocate money from the General Revenue Fund to the PTSD fund as early as next year. For the second round of the fund, the government lowered the $250,000 matched funding threshold to $100,000.
