Like I said a good rule of thumb for level 2s would be a CR1. Then give it hp. It’s better to do that than up the cr. Making an encounter more health spongy taxes resources without being as lethal. It lets them use more spells and stuff and be more creative.

Bruh. You’re def using CR wrong. A CR2 is a potentially lethal fight for a party of 4 level 2 peeps.

Bandits? Or Kobolds? Either one is notoriously bad for their CR. Good rule of thumb if the party is less than lvl5, and you want a scary but survivable fight do a step down. Ex: lvl 3 party do a car 2. If it dies too fast add 20 or 50hp. Never add dmg.
