I’ve been riding the waterfront from Pioneer Square to the Ballard Bridge for 15 years. Extraordinary transformation over the past three yrs

From suicidal car dance to boringly safe. It’s a big improvement but, to be honest, I’m gonna miss the stupid little bridge.

No more bridge over nothing in Interbay.

Another hit-and-run motor vehicle homicide in Kitsap County. The third this year. Fuck

Coughlin is critical of the of the mayor’s 25-26 budget, which he voted against, and which will spin down over 60% of the cities reserves.

The mayor is whistling past the graveyard and wants to wait till after the election to let people know about upcoming tax increases and cuts the city services.

Bemerton mayoral candidate debate between city council member Jeff Coughlin, and two term incumbent Greg Wheeler.

Big differences include Coughlin‘s championing of the successful elimination of parking minimums, which the mayor opposed

IMO, 6th is the cornerstone of all future multimodal travel in Bremerton. If this little 1.1mile stretch isn't built safely, Brem will never be an all-ages-abilities bike town.

Going on two years since my first @theurbanist.org article on the topic. www.theurbanist.org/2023/10/26/t...

Warren to Pacific - choose Alt B (or maybe A). B is the ‘safe bike’ alternative. But Alt A does something cool, it would create Brem’s first ‘parking protected bike lane’ - there’s several bike lanes in the city that would be safer if Brem switched the parking w/ the biking… maybe worth trying?

Hewitt Ave - choose Alt A. Sigh, Hewitt is embedded within the previous Roosevelt-Penn alternative. And if the city does the right thing (Alt B) on Roosevelt, then neither of their options are applicable… Sigh. This is unnecessarily complex, I do not understand the city’s thought process here.

Roosevelt Ave to Pennsylvania - choose Alt B. Alt B is one of two sections where the city eliminates the unnecessary center turn lane. This section passes by Kiwanis Park and Our Lady School/Church. High pedestrian traffic, let’s make it safe.

Naval Ave - choose Alt A. The ‘B’ option has the terrible ‘turn pockets’, which give cyclists the opportunity to be threatened by cars on both sides of their body at the same time. B is awful.

Here the consensus preferences from local bike advocates, one at a time.

Olympic Ave - choose Alt A. Honestly both options are bad. I can’t fathom why little Olympic Ave needs a dedicated center turn lane. But Option A has a traffic calming center island, so it’s a little better

Bremerton released it's third proposal for 'Active Transportation Improvements' on Brem's critical E-W 6th Street. The document is a long, skinny PDF packed with info.

Critically, at 5 locations, they provide 'Alternatives' for City Council to choose between.

Confirmation of good news about the Bear Gulch fire. Recreation had been closed along the entirety of area between Hoodsport and Brinnon, many are now reopening. Expect erosion and tree fall on trails.

I hear the same argument in my town: ‘lowering speed limits doesn’t work bc people don’t obey speed limits and cops are overworked.’

The data disagrees. The most deadly streets in WA have speed limits b/w 30-40 mph. Lowering limits saves lives wtsc.wa.gov/dashboards/f...

My two main steeds are a 90s road bike (72d HT) and a drop bar rigid mountain bike (68). I love the difference between them, I ride the same streets and trails in a different way. One is a dance, the other’s a romp.

Fair. I lived in Othello in the teens, Harrell was my council member. He was no friend of bikes then.

But a shit ton of bike lanes are being build, coincident w his time as mayor. I wish my shitty mayor did 1/50th as much. bsky.app/profile/bike...

Bruce Harrell story:

2017, biking father was car killed leaving McD’s job on S Rainier. Vigil at the death site, several speakers spoke impactfuly about the man + unsafe streets

CM Harrell gives anti-Trump stump speech. Utterly off tone and topic. He wasn’t a friend of bikes at the time.

Seattle has vastly expanded the bike network, including a ton of upgraded PBLs.

You can lionize Harrell for all those, after he loses the election in 4 weeks

First Saturday in 4 years that you can’t take. Brem-Seattle fast ferry, due to state budget cuts. Lame

They didn’t cut the the KC Metro’s Downtown to West Seattle Saturday ferry. Brem is always cut first.

Kitsap County release their Community Survey Results. Mostly good, 74% rate quality of life here either Excellent or Good.

Ease of walking and bike score very low. Just 33% gave a positive score for 'Ease of Walking' and just 27% for 'ease of travel by bicycle'. www.kitsap.gov/News%20Relea...

Hoodsport, WA is rad - great brewery, coffee, ice cream. Some good restaurants, right on the hood canal. Go spend too much money, tell them they are awesome. They need it.

The largest fire in Olympic Nat'l Park history is *basically * out. Bear Gulch burned 20,000 acres, but has stopped growing. 100% containment won't be declared for a while.

Skys are clear. Huge thanks to the firefighters.

Go support Hoodsport & Hamma Hamma businesses. They missed their summer.
