The power of Scots song from Women in Love by DH Lawrence. Ursula sings Annie Lawrie in an Alpine hotel and it touches everyone who hears it.
‘Wie schön, wir rührend” Ach, die schottische Lieder, sie haben so viel Stimmung!
[How beautiful, how moving. Oh, the Scots songs are so atmospheric.]

One of the most enchanting places in Europe for a Scot is Veere in the Netherlands. For almost 400 years it was the Scottish Staple - a home from home for Scottish merchants trading with Europe. They’re still proud of their Scots history, so a warm welcome awaits you. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇳🇱

@joao_kay looking cool in Calistoga back in 2017. Great memories, great Napa Valley wine, and the thrill of following in the footsteps of the great Robert Louis Stevenson who wrote Silverado Squatters nearby. Scots vigneron Andy Smith of Dumol there with me.

Worked in Berwick for a few years - so many yrs later still a divided place. Some events for Scots, some for English, & being a Scottish Cumbrian never knew where I was welcome so just ignored politics!

The Scottish patriotism of the Flemish folk is shown when 30 of their merchants died defending the Red Hall in Berwick in 1296 against the violence of the English forces under the Scotophobe Edward I. Berwick was Scotland's main port then, and its population was massacred.
Scotland was a multi-lingual, multi-national society from the beginning. When David I founded the Royal Burghs he addressed the people there as "Scottis et Anglis, Frankis et Flemmingis" – the Scots, English, French & Flemish who made up his Community of the Realm of Scotland.
