It’s the time of year that birders affectionately refer to as Weird Duck Season. Ducks that breed far north make their way here during the winter so there’s generally a more interesting variety of ducks to see. Add in hybrids & sea ducks, & every outing turns into a refresher course on ducks.

🎶 We like duck butts and we cannot lie and you other birders can’t deny! 🎶

Dabbling ducks use this feeding strategy to munch on aquatic plants, seeds, & invertebrates - their bills are equipped with tiny ridges called lamellae, which work like a strainer. Pretty efficient and no diving required!🙌

If you spot two male Northern Flickers facing off, bills raised and calling “wicka,” you’re seeing their famous wicka dance! This flashy display helps them defend territory and sometimes impress a nearby female. Most duels end peacefully when one flicker outdances the other winning the territory.
