it's def worth it bcs the design chops are so on-point in terms of enemy composition. shirley's assist gives you a genei jin-style afterimage that breaks the game open if you need it

was thinking through arcade collections on pc that would be feasible to buy for ~20 students and I'm crying that there isn't a good one for pc that isn't all NES games or just like, three games

basically a way for game design teachers to distribute these retro games to students for educational purposes (maybe even with built-in features like model viewers, code benchmark toggles, ram watch) without violating copyright, which is such a big issue with academic game analysis

when I was in high school I had a teacher that would circle every instance of "is" in red ink; obv not good to force everything into active voice, but it made me more choosy about when and why I use passive voice. wish I had gone through that for "can" as well

was getting feedback on my academic resume (multi-thousand word essays on research/teaching interests) and got dinged pretty heavily on how much I spam "can" in front of other verbs... sort of embarrassing how often I fall back on it even in my games writing

last part is sorta jumping to conclusions (do players not feel entitled with MP games? do they not see devs as service workers?) but def agree that it instantly seems practical for MP, and it should be communicated that interesting mechanics were developed from those restrictions that are SP viable

wrote about this when I answered a timer q+a a couple months back but it's interesting that the discourse skews in this direction when many of the most popular mp action games use a timer with no pushback (every battle royale, peak recently, fighting games, many shooter modes, etc.)

was out on the bay and stumbled into a lit pier at 10:30 at night with maybe 25 people fishing. very beautiful scene... bloody scissors jammed into the wooden railing above a 5 gallon bucket full of shrimp bait and scraps, kids running around and casting lines, lawn chairs and windbreakers

I get why people are doing the "well actually sh2/3 weren't subtle either" wrt shf criticism but also like... we don't need to debate at that level lol these things don't operate on a single axis of how "subtle" the themes are. one of those things where if you need to clap back, mute and move on
