I spoke with New Republic about #border state economic ties with #Canada and the impacts we could expect from this #trade war and increasingly heated rhetoric. The downstream effects on border communities will be varied and numerous.
In states which rely heavily on Canadian tourists—such as Washington and Maine—increasing hostilities could discourage future travel, which in turn could weaken local economies.

Any arguments that Trump and co make about #tariffs being about evening the playing field for American industry are out the window after agreements made today between #Canada and #Mexico. Tariffs were always about strong-arming our neighbors and biggest trading partners into getting what he wants.

We won’t know the full impacts until we know what #tariffs actually end up looking like, but it’s important to understand that tariffs are a tax on imports. The buyer pays - American companies pay. On top of that, there will be unintended consequences, particularly in #border communities.
