Back in November 2008, America showed the world what peaceful transfer of power truly looks like. The day after Barack Obama’s historic win, President George W. Bush, a Republican, stood in the White House Rose Garden and congratulated his Democratic successor with grace, dignity and genuine respect. He called Obama’s victory “impressive,” recognized it as a proud moment for the nation and pledged to ensure a smooth transition. It wasn’t about party lines. It was about the country. As an American, watching that moment still fills me with pride. It was a reminder that the presidency is bigger than one man, one party or one election. We can disagree fiercely on policy, we can battle hard during a campaign, but when the people speak, we unite behind the choice they’ve made. That’s the America I love, where leaders put the nation before themselves and where honor and respect guide even the most difficult transitions. We could use more of that today, the kind of statesmanship that shows the world we’re not just the land of the free, but also the home of the gracious. 🇺🇸[Bush, Obama, 2008 election, US politics, American history, democracy, Republican Democrat, presidential speech]View all 17,089 comments
