“As the first Black woman elected to the U.S. Senate, I knew I could not be the last.” — Carol Moseley Braun

Her victory reshaped what’s possible.

Today, we honor her grit, her legacy, and her call to keep opening doors for those who come after.

On October 3, 1904, Mary McLeod Bethune opened a one-room school for Black girls in Daytona, Florida.

Her vision grew into Bethune-Cookman University, shaping generations of leaders and affirming the power of education as liberation.

We honor her legacy today and every day.

Shirley didn’t ask for permission, she made space. A timeless reminder that when the door is closed, we don’t wait for it to open, we walk in anyway.
