Fall migrants are wasting no time moving through Blandy this month! Birders already have reported a dozen species of warblers from the Arboretum in September. Other migrants include flycatchers, vireos, orioles, Bobolinks, Scarlet Tanagers, Blue Grosbeaks, and Indigo Buntings.

If you want to see these beauties in bloom, you'll need to plan a morning visit to Blandy. Located in front of the Quarters Building, these common spiderwort, 𝑇𝑟𝑎𝑑𝑒𝑠𝑐𝑎𝑛𝑡𝑖𝑎 𝑣𝑖𝑟𝑔𝑖𝑛𝑖𝑎𝑛𝑎, open their flowers in the morning - to attract active pollinators - only to close them again in the afternoon.

It's Penstemonium! Penstemon is a genus of flowering plants with over 280 species endemic to North America. We have three flowering species on display at Blandy. From left to right: smooth beardtongue (P. laevigatus), foxglove beardtongue (P. digitalis), and calico beardtongue (P. calycosus).
