70 years ago today, Donald Campbell broke the world water speed record, after six years of trying. A new world record of 202mph was set, smashing the previous mark of 178mph

Apologies for the insufficient footage of Kingswear Castle here, but I was in an inflatable kayak being run down by the Greenway ferry, and dealing with somebody making an epic arse of trying to stick his yacht onto a pontoon whilst his crew was doing nothing to remind him of our presence...

How big was Tog Mor, the crane that lifted the Mary Rose?

Pretty Big...

Happy to say I'll be writing the #biography of 1920s-30s speed flier Frank Hawks for @tamupress.bsky.social. Handsome, charming, and daring, he set records and drew crowds all across the Americas and in Europe, and he even starred in the movies. (Photo, 1929: Library and Archives Canada) — #avgeeks

The very first Ford Transit van rolled off the production line #OnThisDay, 9 August, in 1965. A firm favourite with tradesmen over the years. The list price was £542 in 1965. #FordTransit

Next year the boat will be run on Coniston Water by a different team with engineering support from Babcock, so with any luck things will go more smoothly

Yes, there were a few runs on the very small Loch Fad. It revealed a number of problems to address - hull and sponsons leaked constantly, the canopy blew off, and during the final high speed run, the driver momentarily lost control and almost hit the pier. But it was a great milestone

Fascinating pic. The Avro 619 Five was a scaled down version of the Avro 618 Ten, which was itself a licence-built version of the Fokker F.VIIb/3m. Only a few were built but they did some rather intrepid flights

At the anniversary of Donald Campbell’s first world water speed record in #BluebirdK7 on 23 July the boat was visited by a car that Donald Campbell may have driven at the time. The prototype AC Aceca is rumoured to have been loaned to Campbell between 1954 and 1956, though there’s no direct evidence

Here's an exclusive shot of the faithfully recreated Monument to the Queensway (Mersey) Tunnel in Liverpool, which topped out in recent days.

The 60ft Art Deco light beacon was originally one of a pair, designed by Herbert Rowse in 1934 to celebrate the engineering and construction of the tunnel.
