❌ Promise made. Promise broken?

The UK Environment Secretary, Steve Reed, VOWED to end bottom trawling.

A year on, and we are STILL waiting. 3/4 🔽

🚨 BREAKING: 20,000+ HOURS of suspected bottom trawling WRECKED the UK’s offshore marine “protected” areas last year, our research shows! 🌊 That would score tracks on the seabed that would stretch EIGHT TIMES around the UK. All with the government's permission! 1/4 🔽

UK's marine protected areas face over 20,000 hours of bottom trawling
Bottom trawling is a fishing method where large, weighted nets are dragged across the seafloor by one or two boats to catch fish and other marine life that live on or near the bottom.

YOU can help create a lasting legacy for UK waters with Blue Marine, Oceana UK and Only One by asking Steve Reed to close our marine protected areas to bottom trawling. We stand at a crossroads, protect our ocean and save our planet, or continue to plunder our greatest natural asset.

A new poll reveals overwhelming public support for a trawling ban in protected areas. It follows the cinema release of feature film OCEAN WITH DAVID ATTENBOROUGH which features graphic scenes of undersea destruction caused by trawling, filmed in greater detail than ever before.
“Bottom trawling is still allowed in many so-called marine protected areas worldwide. And perhaps even more astonishingly, it is subsidised by governments. Very few places are safe from this. including almost nowhere in my own country.” - David Attenborough, in OCEAN.

#TheBottomLine is, you can’t have a marine protected area and trawl it. ❌

Held at Royal Festival Hall, the event left everyone reflecting on how vital it is to protect our seas. Huge thanks to the Players of #People’sPostcodeLottery and @bluemarinef.bsky.social for this powerful experience. 💙

Our friends @oceanauk.bsky.social are in court today, fighting to get big oil out of our ocean.

This is a court case to keep a close eye on 👇👇
🚨 Big Oil want us silent. They want us to accept more oil, more destruction, more climate chaos. We say no. We’re at the High Court in London right now for our case challenging the latest oil and gas licences.

🐧 GREAT OCEAN NEWS 🐧

The SA government has finally declared no-take zones around key African Penguin breeding colonies.

My friends at SANCCOB have worked tirelessly for many years to make this happen, and they deserve to be widely praised for this hard-fought victory.

🚨The great UK fishing scandal continues as 54% of catch limits are set above scientific advice for 2025, further jeopardising our dwindling fish populations and struggling small-scale fishing fleets.

The Labour government must and can turn this around for people & the planet. Share if you agree✊
