Today we are in #Sheridan #Wyoming at the #WYOfilmfest for the screening #BlueZeus. We are not far from where this #reddesert #stallion lived wild & free most of his life. An emotional weekend, but very cathartic that is shared with incredible #wildhorse advocates, who are part of the #documentary.

Search for articles by Eric Molvar, a wildlife biologist. He has written extensively on why livestock grazing is the single biggest threat of all commercial activities threatening public lands.
bluezeusthemovie.bsky.social
Many ranchers with privileged commercial access to public lands for grazing livestock are millionaires or billionaire corporations with names like Koch, Hilton, Simplot. They are heavily subsidized by taxpayers for cheap grazing permits while contributing less than 2% total US beef production.

That creates a perfect environment for non-native, invasive cheatgrass. It’s green in the spring, but once it's dry, it has no forage or habitat value for wildlife and turns grasslands into ecological wastelands. It is also extremely flammable and burns with unusual intensity.

Meanwhile, their hooves break up the biological soil crusts, a complex web of microscopic organisms that can take 100 years to grow back. It gets no time to recover due to constant overgrazing in massive numbers turning it into dust and wiping out the perennial bunch grasses.
bluezeusthemovie.bsky.social
The intermountain west has native perennial bunch grasses that can live up to 60 years. Their roots go down 6 feet or more in dense networks and store a lot of carbon underground - they are our most resilient carbon sinks. They can’t survive heavy cattle grazing year after year.
bluezeusthemovie.bsky.social
Overgrazing cattle transforms narrow, deep stream channels that are cool and clear and support trout, into wide, shallow, muddy water, murky streams that won't support the native fish anymore. They destroy the aquatic ecosystems in the West, where fresh water is more precious than gold.
bluezeusthemovie.bsky.social
Heavy cattle grazing wipes out willows and other shrubs along the waterways, so nothing shades the stream. It breaks the stream banks down and silt erodes into the water. Cattle constantly urinate and defecate in the water, destroying water quality.
bluezeusthemovie.bsky.social
Consequently, they concentrate along streams, around the springs. That's where all the moist vegetation is located. Those valley bottom stream sides are the richest, most biodiverse oases in the desert. Cattle denude them, destroying the most important wildlife habitat.
bluezeusthemovie.bsky.social
Cattle are ecological misfits in the arid American west, in the desert. They were bred from an animal that originated in the boggy forests of Northern Europe. They're used to really wet climates with abundant rainfall, rich deep soils, and high productivity.
