One of my favorite habitats in Michigan are marl fens. Typically you expect carnivorous plants in acidic bogs, but in this special habitat with extremely alkaline soils Sarracenia purpurea and Drosera linearis thrive along with calciphiles like Primula mistassinica

Albemarle politics is now headed in a radical new direction which will undo decades old conservation policies. Virginia Beach went through this years ago too. Remember this moment, there may be an “I told you so” in the four years when housing is less affordable and residents are displaced.

I’ve been wanting to see American barberry in the wild for a while. Despite the Latin name the center of its distribution is SW Virginia. It would make an excellent native alternative to Invasive Japanese Barberry.

Bog Buckbean is one of the first rare plants I tried to find in Virginia and it has taken me over a decade to finally see it in the wild. It looks like the headwaters of this fen were ditched and drained which explains how limited it is now.

Neil Williamson's information is wrong. There was an expansion of the development area in 2015 and another before that in 2011. So, we he could say the "Obama era development area boundaries" but not Nixon. Besides, the rural areas as we know them didn't even exist until 1980.

Want to grown your own “vanilla”? Leptodes bicolor is a much easier orchid than vanilla and if you pollinate the flowers the pods can be fermented to make a vanilla substitute.

Here’s a bill we could really stand to pass in Virginia. Speculation is a big factor in housing affordability. This could both free up some inventory and make primary homes less expensive.
Second-home tax, other property tax relief bills clear the House
Bills aimed at reducing residential taxes have won bipartisan support — but still have the Montana Senate between them and the governor’s desk.

To create affordable and livable areas, we need to build more compactly. Sprawl does not lead to affordability.

I simply don’t buy the crocodile tears about affordability from developers. There’s nothing stopping a proposal for a rural preservation development with smaller affordable homes. This was always about finding a way to bust a hole in the wall protecting the rural area from high density development.

The EPA and other agencies are being gutted so local and state governments need to step up now and fill that gap. It’ll be open season on wetlands if we don’t. If you fish, swim, kayak or merely drink water then this matters to you. Once removed, we can’t just put natural wetlands back

If a Nigerian Prince offers to audit your business then BLOCK that email and toss it in your spam folder. If a South African “Prince” who drove Twitter into the ground offers to audit your government… same.

Here’s an interesting issue to watch. Speaking for myself, as someone who supports both solar and conservation, it would be good to have better guidelines for resource protection, but not mandates which take away local control.
Bill requiring solar planning framework dies, returns, dies again
Concerns over impacts on forest, farmland sank the proposal.

Blue states should temporarily hire ousted Federal employees into their corresponding state agencies. Blue states represent a majority of the Nation’s
GDP. It’s time to start using that wealth to build a fail safe against the potential failure of the Federal Government.

Here is a rather critical point… it the only thing you care about is the size of the federal government, or how much taxes you pay this is still going to end VERY badly.
As Trump tries to dismantle the Department of Education, remember that his plan to cut the corporate tax rate to 15% would give the 100 largest corporations a tax cut larger than the entire department's K-12 budget.

Really think about how twisted this all is.

I’ve been lucky enough to visit this adorable house before. It’s really an architectural masterpiece, and a good example of sustainable design.
I enjoy my compact little house. The whole thing is just 26ft in diameter. All essentials are on one floor. The “bedroom” is a Murphy bed on the far right -not shown. The photo is taken from the loft that serves as a library. The studio is in a walk in basement.
