Depictions of the First World War have far too often erased human lives from history in favour of gender norms, whiteness, and heteronormativity. But that was not the reality. There is a tapestry of diverse experiences that has been historically excluded.

So race science and agressive misogyny. I hate how the Nazis have just straight up given up hiding.

I'm no expert, but I feel like many of those positions could be combined into one main role instead of paying three separate people $100,000- $160,000 to do a lot of the same things.

There's also two separate Directors for Development & Engagement (one at Grenfell.), and a separate marketing and communications director at Grenfell.

Associate Directors for (each separate positions): Communication, Marketing, and Development.
And two Executive Directors for Development
and Marketing & Communications.

Here are some of the titles:
- 4 directors of Finance and Administrative Services, and a additional Director specifically for budgeting.
-Director of Student Life, Student Residences and Varsity Athletics
- Associate Directors for Business Development, Strategic Procurement, and Strategic Services

On the sunshine list for MUN last year (salaries $100,000) there were 42 directors, 5 VPs, 16 associate directors, 4 executive directors, and 3 school heads.

I've been digging into the MUN budget. Despite these "necessary" cuts to things like the Harris Centre, the admin is adding an extra $1,536,493 Administrative Salaries totalling $126,665,836 for 2025-26.
They allocated $470,915 for 100th anniversary programming and to a Canada games project office.

That makes me so sad!!!! They’re taking all the best parts away. It’s disgusting.

Also, and I say this respectfully knowing it’s someone’s job, but why did there need to be two specific 100th anniversary and Canada games coordinators
hired on at $100,000+ each? Surely that responsibility could have fallen to one of the 5 marketing directors or various operations coordinators.

For the purpose of disclosure: I was lucky enough to be chosen as a Harris centre fellow for the last semester of my MA and received a small stipend. But know that this is not swaying my stance here, they do very important work in this province which I saw first hand.

The associate vice president makes $316,000 for god sakes. But sure, public engagement and the Harris centre are the problem.
booksandtea123.bsky.social
I feel like the real answer is salary and budget caps like the rest of the public service. Starting with the incoming president who is once again making over $450,000 which is absolutely ridiculous.
booksandtea123.bsky.social
If you look on the sunshine list, the bulk of the jobs aren’t public engagement or the Harris centre, they’re admin positions like Associate vice-presidents/ special advisor to the president. Most making $170,000- $200,000 a year or more…
booksandtea123.bsky.social
I guess it kind of makes sense, the people benefiting from the $200,000 positions are the ones with the power to decide the cuts.
booksandtea123.bsky.social
The MUN cuts to public engagement and the Harris Centre are beyond frustrating, the university is seriously going to do anything except cut the bloated administration.
booksandtea123.bsky.social
This is a bad sign, but the naïve part of me is still holding out hope that these cuts won’t impact other areas like healthcare, housing, etc.

Underfunded social systems and austerity fuel far right politics. When people don’t get their needs met they’re more likely to turn to populist leaders, including the radical right.
booksandtea123.bsky.social
If you want to minimize the influence of the far right, defunding public institutions is not the way to go about it.

Some of the most concerning sections although theres many.

The bill isn’t about borders, that was mainly handled back in December with the initial round. The bulk of this iteration is focused on immigration and directly targets refugees and those claiming asylum crossing from the US. It also lets the government seize mail and access personal information.
