I absolutely loved this book, full of autumnal celebrations, a gorgeous dog, community spirit and a little romance. It even encouraged me to do a little autumnal decorating at home.

Painting of the day - Home and the Homeless by Thomas Faed.
The painting contrasts a poor but loving Scottish family with a destitute mother and child at the door, linked by a sorrowful orphaned boy positioned centrally. The interior of the cottage is depicted in rich detail, including a claymore on a shelf, while the father plays with a child and the mother works.

Censorship is so 1984. Read for your rights.

Today kicks off #BannedBooksWeek, and this year's theme reminds us that the right to read belongs to all of us, that censorship has no place in contemporary society, and that we must defend our rights.

Popped to the garden centre today. The bird food section comes highly recommended, the birds even shop there themselves.

Painting of the day - A View of Tantallon Castle With the Bass Rock by Alexander Naysmith.
The painting shows the dramatic, semi-ruined Tantallon Castle, on high cliffs overlooking the sea, with the iconic Bass Rock in the background. The ocean is turbulent and the weather dramatic.

Very true though. As a teacher I often had to explain that to parents. Some often wouldn't let their children choose a book they thought was too easy or a cartoon book. Same in bookshops. I have an honours degree yet I still sometimes read a children's book, it's good for my mental health and fun.

'Many adults feel that every children's book has to teach them something.... My theory is a children's book... can be just for fun.'

Thank you. I just thought it would lift my spirits as the days get gloomier.

Mine too . We're only an hour away from Manchester and we don't go to their art gallery to see it often enough.

Beautiful. I love that painting. I saw it in person at the Pre-Raphaelite exhibition at the Walker a few years ago.

Painting of the day - Autumn Leaves by John Everett Millais.
Oil on canvas paibting of four girls, in twilight, collecting and raking together fallen leaves in a garden. They are making a bonfire, but the fire itself is invisible, only smoke emerging from between the leaves. The two girls on the left are wearing middle-class clothing of the era; the two on the right are in rougher, working class clothing.

Painting of the day - The Gust of Wind by Jean-Francois Millet.
Painting of a tree being violently uprooted by an intense gale, with a small peasant figure dwarfed by nature's force and the windswept La Hague peninsula landscape.
