In other games, this principle is used in various flavors to suit the game. 3D fighting games usually use volumes like cylinders. Knowing your hurtbox well in a shmup (in Ketsui the player hurtbox is 2x3 pixels, in the ship center) will be the difference between life and death.

Displacement gets you other distinct behaviors. You'll likely encounter disjointed attacks where the hitbox and hurtbox are partially or completely separated from each other. This creates an effect of making certain attacks invincible against certain options like those with low-hitting hitboxes. 5/7

Time! Certain boxes are always active, most others around attacks are only active for the duration of that attack.
Some attacks in Street Fighter 6 have lingering hurtboxes: hurtboxes that stay active after the hitboxes deactivate. This makes whiff punishing easier. 4/7

A hurtbox overlapping a hurtbox does nothing, but a hitbox overlapping a hitbox causes a clash in some games!

That might seem to be all there is to hitboxes and hurtboxes, but there's a 3rd dimension that glues everything together... 3/7

Hitboxes (red boxes 🟥) determine the regions where an attack exists.
Hurtboxes (green boxes 🟩) determine the regions where an attack can connect.
An attack connects ONLY IF any part of a hitbox OVERLAPS with any part of a hurtbox. 2/7
