2025 HAS BEEN A GOOD YEAR TO BE A JACK KIRBY FAN. Fantastic Four: First Steps ended with a quote from the King himself, and also featured two actors playing young versions of Kirby and Stan Lee. And for one day in July, the street where Kirby grew up was unofficially renamed Jack Kirby Way as part of the promotions for the movie. Now, a group of fans is working to make that name change official. Comic book luminaries Frank Miller, Chris Claremont, Brian Michael Bendis, Paul Levitz and Marvel editor-in-chief C. B. Cebulski are among those lobbying to co-name a block of Essex St. in New York's Lower East Side after Kirby. The campaign sprang to life after comic book historian Roy Schwartz learned of previous efforts to officially honor Kirby in New York had failed. “It started a long and arduous process. Believe it or not, it's not easy to rename a street in New York City, so there was a lot of red tape,” says Schwartz, who is leading the campaign with Karen Green, the curator for comics and cartoon arts at Columbia University libraries. Schwartz's day job as a communications exec for a law firm came in handy, as his employer donated resources to the cause, pro bono. After several petitions and presentations to government bodies, it will go to a vote before the New York City Council on Dec. 18. If it passes, it will go to the mayor’s desk to sign. The street would be at Essex and Delancey, a block away from where Kirby was born on August 28, 1917. “The honors for Jack Kirby seem to be coming in late, but they're very sweet,” Miller tells Heat Vision of the artist he came up idolizing and later befriended. “He grew up very much as a Lower East Side kid, and it never left his voice or his manner, believe me.” Below, a look at the street when it was renamed for a day this summer:

COMIC ART WATCHERS GOT A JOLT THIS WEEK when Heritage announced it was auctioning Frank Frazetta’s painting to the 1967 paperback Conan the Conqueror. The artwork itself is titled Conan the Berserker. To many Frazetta collectors, this is considered the peak of his covers. And it comes from the collection of Kirk Hammett, the lead guitarist of Metallica, who is a known Frazetta lover. Hammett picked up the piece directly from Frazetta in 2009 for $1 million. It was a massive sum at the time, but it’s a steal in light of what we’re about to tell you: Frazetta’s art has skyrocketed in value in the last decade and this auction is coming on the heels of a record $13.5 million (yes, you read that right) paid in September for a different Frazetta Conan piece. So what does this do for Conan the Berserker? Well, the starting bid is set at a savage $10 million. And that’s not including the buyer’s premium, which automatically puts the true opening price at $12.5 million. Collectors want to know just who will jump into the fray. And could it be picked up by the Lucas Museum, which today announced the date of its long-awaited opening? It’s 27 days before the auction. Do you know where your wallet is?
