#interferonFriendorFoe ? So happy to have hosted my friend @boulantlab.bsky.social today at @ciml.bsky.social , showing nice new data on how basal #IFN lambda is essential for tight junction formation in epithelial cells! Very nice work from him and @meganstanifer.bsky.social

I had a great time at @ciml.bsky.social
Excellent day talking science. A special thanks to @achillebro.sky.social for the invitation. This institute is very impressive with so many great

Wrap-up of Innate Immunity I: The session was kicked off by Zina Uckeley from @boulantlab.bsky.social lab talking about Hypoxia increases susceptibility to rotavirus infection by repressing the induction of type III interferon #GfV2025 (HMB).

I highly recommend this position. I was among the first recipient of this fellowship and I cannot be more thankful to the CHS foundation for launching my career. contact me if you have question about the position and the scientific environment

Finally official! We got a DFG-NSF award to fund our collaborative project with @boulantlab.bsky.social at the University of Florida to understand the role of our newly characterized ARF1 compartments in polarized sorting in epithelial cells 🎉🎉🎉 very excited to get started with this!

We are very proud of our undergrad student Victoria Karaluz. She has been selected to be one of our student ambassador for our emerging pathogen institute @epi.ufl.edu
Cool video where she is highlighting the work she is doing in our teams @boulantlab.bsky.social @meganstanifer.bsky.social

Working with EPI members @meganstanifer.bsky.social and @boulantlab.bsky.social, #UF undergraduate student Victoria aims to tackle the pathogens that infect our intestines. Her research focuses on how a low-oxygen environment impacts parasites.

Investigating how the intestines respond to infections.
Cryptosporidium parvum is a protozoan parasite that infects the intestinal tract, causing the diarrheal disease cryptosporidiosis. A common route of infection is drinking contaminated water or eating contaminated food. Victoria Karaluz is an undergraduate student at the University of Florida College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. She studies within the department of molecular genetics and microbiology, working with EPI members Megan Stanifer and Steeve Boulant on intestinal infections. The research within the lab has found that certain pathogens, like the parasite Cryptosporidium parvum, are influenced by the lack of oxygen in the gut, also known as hypoxia. The parasite has been found to replicate more in a hypoxic environment. YES it is!
I usually like to quote Friedrich Nietzsche "That which does not kill us makes us stronger". This time it may kill us.
On a positive note, I will be at Gfv2025, i hope to see you there.

Now, we need to wait until a clear picture of what the future NIH will look like emerges. And hopefully restart from scratch!
After three years of hard work from the entire team to obtain the holy R01 grant. it is so frustrating!
boulantlab.bsky.social
This means the grant will not be approved next week, maybe never. This was a major milestone for the team since relocated the lab from Germany to Uni Florida. This major step back has major implications: we need to freeze planned hiring, refocus research projects, delay tenuring application 🧵2

Some months ago, I received the great news that my #NIH RO1 grant received a likely fundable score. With the NIH not being able to hold meetings and take decision, I found out that the council meeting is canceled (it was planned next week). 🧵/1

Late Christmas party with the lab. Last weekend, amazing laser tag adventure with my lab and the lab of @meganstanifer.bsky.social .
After shooting at each other, we had amazing food in our place. We are very grateful to have such great teams surrounding us.

We are live on bluesky. Together with @meganstanifer.bsky.social we love organoids enteroids and enteric viruses. We also found type III interferon fascinating.
