Let's get a pinned post here so people know what I'm all about:
- I play Superman 64 quickly and recklessly
- I pretend I understand how to be good at city builders
- Sometimes I'm a variety streamer who play games with his wife
- I try to make art but tend to make cursed masterpieces

I also struggle to practice off stream. But I also want to be good on stream without practicing. That’s a totally realistic expectation for myself, right?
I also struggle joining new communities because I’ve just had bad internet experiences where people are so annoyed when someone new shows up.

That feeling of potential is the best part of speedrunning. I just wish I could find another game that captures it for me!

Yeah, I’ve been happy to see you optimize the heck out of it, but I also see how frustrated you feel about not being sure where to go now. I think that’s a really common feeling for a lot of us from small games.

Yeah, it’s a bummer that I really like this hobby, but I’m also in such a rut with it. Maybe the answer is that @menacemandz.bsky.social just needs to teach us both some Barbie game runs.

This is how I felt about Superman. It was fun to revive a game with basically no community, but it also leaves you feeling kind of lonely if no one else thinks it will be fun too.

I completely get this. Speedruns are way less fun for me when a category is dominated by someone who streams 40+ hours a week. I’m jealous they get to do that, but I don’t have the time to learn super optimized runs.

So whenever I look at a new game it feels wrong. I don’t understand how to break the game. I am learning a route rather than trailblazing it. It’s so opposite of what it was for me working on Supes. I don’t expect to WR every game I play, but I just get so immediately discouraged by the change.

I bring this up because last night on stream I talked about my hangups for how I give up on games. I really lived in and broke apart Superman 64. I found new glitches, new routing, and in that process I believed I could grind for WR.

I’d love to hear from other speedrunners, how do you find the motivation to start learning a new game to run? Is there a small community game you would to see someone else run?

Ever since @barbie.horse followed me, I've been trying to decide if I should learn a Barbie speedrun as a joke, then I remembered that my family actually did have a Barbie PC game when I was growing up, so there is one I have experience playing.
