I've written books (BLACKBURN, LUNATICS, etc.) and recorded music (Bland Lemon Denton, AT THE EARTH'S CORE). I love my spouse (freedomisachoice.bsky.social) and am devoted to my dogs (Chester & Millie) and friends (you know who you are).

A moment of doggie goofiness to help bolster you for the coming week. Odds are you're gonna need it.
A fluffy black-and-white border collie named Chester pushes his head into the chest of his best pal Millie, a reddish-tan black-mouthed cur who is lying on her side on a carpeted floor against a dog bed. Millie is looking up at the camera with a wide-eyed and open-mouthed goofy expression. Her tongue is just about to loll out.

Barb (who was with Chester, who likes to dawdle) took this shot of Millie and me as we headed home on the morning walk a few days ago.

We'll be out there again tomorrow.
A dog and her human, a few dozen yards distant at the top of a hill, are silhouetted against the yellow-gold glow of the rising sun as they walk away from the camera on a paved country road.

B.B. King (1925-2015) was born 100 years ago today.

He and his guitar, Lucille, made a joyful noise for the world. And if Lucille broke a string onstage, B.B. would change it himself as he sang.

They spread unity and love, never division or hate. How I miss them.

At a profound level, MAGA's immigration policies are simply a way to transfer taxpayer dollars to private contractors whose job is to terrorize the American people. Fundamentally, leaders are using our own money to destroy our democracy.

Just now found a third Russian pirate compilation, Blues Fish, this one including BLD's "Marionette About to Drown" -- along with many others including tunes by Memphis Slim and Willie Dixon.

Just now had my attention drawn to a third Russian pirate compilation, Blues Fish, which includes BLD's "Marionette About to Drown" -- alongside tunes by Mark Knopfler, Willie Dixon, and Memphis Slim (plus many others).

The second Russian pirate collection linked above (the one called Blues Forever) swipes "Charlie Watts" -- and Caroline and Bob -do- play on that one.

Browsing during chemo, I've found two Bland Lemon Denton songs swiped by Russian pirates for Blues compilations, along with tunes by the likes of Muddy Waters and Sue Foley. Feeling ripped-off and proud!

Chester and Millie compete for the title of Klassiest Dog of 2025.
A black and white border collie, Chester, lies flat on his back on a hardwood floor to expose his white chest to the camera directly above. He looks quite classy. A reddish-gold black-mouthed cur named Millie lies on her back on a carpeted floor, twisting her head around to gaze upside-down at the camera above her. She is adorable.

I've lived in Texas long enough that I can remember back when we had a goddamn -great- governor who refused to kowtow to bullies. I mean, a fair, fierce, truth-and-justice, no-voter-left-behind badass. Man, those were the days.

Don't believe me? Look her up.

Her name was Ann Richards.

Today, August 1, is "Bandcamp Friday," when Bandcamp waives its share of artists' sales for 24 hours. So if you feel like spending a few bucks on independent music and having all the bucks go to the musicians, today's your day.

Any kind of music. Even Blues. Even mine:

This of course being the same guy who pardoned the violent January 6th insurrectionists who tried to overthrow an election in his name? That guy?

Huh.

So, Congress is going to give convicted child sex trafficker Jizzlaine Maxwell, a known liar and perjurer, immunity to testify about the only guy who can grant her a pardon?

We have a number of squirrels.
This one is a jerk.
Photo 1 of 3: Seen through a window, a squirrel on the branch of a hackberry tree eyes a hanging bird feeder. Photo 2 of 3: Seen through a window, a squirrel has jumped from the branch of a hackberry tree to a hanging bird feeder, and is staring insolently at the photographer. The photo is a bit blurry because the bird feeder is swinging because of the squirrel's leap onto it. Photo 3 of 3: A squirrel has leaped from a bird feeder onto a window screen, and is insolently exposing its underside to the photographer.

We're still here. Just upside-down.
A golden-red hound dog named Millie leans back against the arm of an easy chair, gazing upside-down at the camera with her big mahogany eyes.

But I'm sure 'nuff buying some popcorn.

On 9 May 1800, the abolitionist John Brown was born. He would be convicted of treason against Virginia for his October 1859 raid on the federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry, and hanged on 2 December. His final words asserted that "the crimes of this guilty land will never be purged away but with blood."
This is the Thomas Hart Benton mural in the Kansas State Capitol in Topeka depicting the abolitionist John Brown along with images of the American Civil War and "Bleeding Kansas." Brown, his hair and beard windblown and wild, stands in the center of the mural, a rifle in one hand and a Bible in the other. He is flanked by Union fighters with a U.S. flag on the left, and Confederate fighters with a Confederate battle flag on the right. Brown stands over the dead bodies of a Union soldier and a Confederate soldier. In the near background are covered wagons drawn by oxen, with weary armed men trudging beside them. In the far background, a tornado and a prairie fire threaten destruction. Dark clouds and smoke tinged with flame cover the sky.
