Very grateful to American Nineteenth Century History’s David Cox for putting together this wonderful symposium on #theriseandfallofthesecondamericanrepublic which grew out of the panel on the book at the United States Intellectual History conference organized by Benjamin Park.

As we look forward to a new year (and a season of gift-giving 😉), a hot off-the-press “Carolinian Crucible” by Dr. Patrick Doyle, an insightful history of South Carolina and the US Civil War, including the often overlooked upcountry, should be of great interest 📖!

As people celebrate Veterans/Armistice day, I hope they don’t forget the 19th Century and the works of those like Clara Barton, Walt Whitman, Susie King Taylor, and Dr. Mary Edwards Walker…

Even if it is a bit of an advertisement, a nice little message about reading up on the crucial Indigenous part of United States history!
Celebrate Native American Heritage Month by learning more about the long, rich, complex histories of North America's Native peoples with books from Hopkins Press, including "Enslaved Native Americans and the Making of Colonial South Carolina," "Traitor," and more.

Government is STILL closed, but history STILL doesn’t stop…

What is your favorite American Nineteenth Century story (either set or written in) to tell on Halloween?

Mine is a little tale about the village of Sleepy Hollow and the headless horseman 🎃

Lots of happy tricks and treats to everyone!

I was walking around the Alamo (Texas) when I learned the CEO of the trust that maintains the grounds resigned over a dispute how the history of the 1836 battle is taught…

If the 19th century still matters and is a contested space, couldn’t that be more reason to fund 19th Century US historians 😉

Deadline to apply is December 12, 2025

So if you are a student who has recently completed, or is slated to complete, your undergraduate studies at a British University, do check it out 🎉

Also, any Harriet Lane fans!?!

While James Buchanan might be considered one of the worst-ranked US Presidents of the 19th Century, his niece (described by Queen Victoria as “very ladylike & not at all American” 😂) sounds like one of the White House’s most interesting antebellum figures
