The hardware is not capable of consciousness.
Semiconductors do not create a central nervous system capable of sentience.
The algorithm is merely working as intended to satisfy the user.

There's a special spot in hell for the marketing, product, design, and dev scabs that enabled and normalized those "WANT TO SAVE 10% ON YOUR FIRST ORDER?! GIVE US YOUR EMAIL!" lead cap pop-over modals on every site after browsers went out of their way to restrict pop-ups back in the day.
