Pres. Trump signed a law in 2019 that said furloughed federal workers get paid once a shutdown ends. Today he threatened their back pay. It was Maryland Sens. Chris Van Hollen and Ben Cardin who wrote that law for exactly this reason.

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said he's directed state agencies to keep federally funded programs running with state money during the shutdown. In the past, the feds have reimbursed the state after reopening. There's been no guarantee that will happen this time.

House Democrats aren’t in session today but held a press conference restating their case to fight for health care hours before a government shutdown. Minority leader Hakeem Jeffries said Dems are ready to do their jobs while Republicans are “on vacation.”

Congress clocked out today without a plan to fund the government. Maryland Democrats said their side has been willing to negotiate but all voted against a stopgap bill because they’re hoping to get Republicans to the table.

A federal judge ruled the Trump admin's use of the National Guard in L.A. was illegal and violated a law that keeps military from carrying out law enforcement activities against civilians.
