On Library Lovers Day, enjoy this optimistic 1950s magazine cover

“Stand aside television. The library holds the stage as the curtain rises on this new age of the written word” (1957)

Artist: DL Mays
At the centre of a bright and bustling library, the librarian sets like the smiling captain of a spaceship at the controls. Numerous school children examine the books in the library and seem completely absorbed.

What do you do with all of those leftover tape rolls? Well . . . the Year 1 children from Summerhill Primary know. 😁🤔 www.darrellwakelam.com
A model of ‘the very hungry caterpillar’ made by Year 1 children from recycled cardboard tubes. The artwork shows the caterpillar from the story eating his way through the pages of the book with a fruit on each page. Based on the wonderful illustrations of Eric Carle. A photograph of the leftover tape rolls we used to make our caterpillar model.

It is often too easy for adults to push forwards for neat, standard numerals, when for the child, the personal and cultural meanings predominate.

Why is there such an urge to move the youngest children to produce writing, or 'written' maths that is more appropriate for primary age children?!

This pleases me to know. I may not remember but I like the fact that these words even exist!

Hard Truths isn’t an easy watch. But it is a wonderful and serious film.

Scorching, angry performance by Marianne Jean-Baptiste with great support from Michele Austin, and a strong cast all round. A lovely feel for the London locations too.
