Here's me reading a story I wrote a couple of years ago.
How does a young boy make sense of things that are much too big to fully comprehend?

the next best thing
is the very last slice
toasted
knowing that nothing has been wasted
and yes
more butter
and sweet bitter marmalade
spooned in clumps from the jar
and thickly spread
and yes more tea
Assam or Darjeeling
the crunch of the crust
the appropriate applause

and the dream of encores

The best thing
is the first slice
cut while the bread is
still warm from the oven
slaked with thick
slabs of cold salted butter
the crust a little bitter
against the softness
of the crumb
enjoyed in a quiet kitchen
standing up at the counter
with tea
on a darkening afternoon

that is the best thing

we would have half-lives
and would therefore
never actually die

Friday afternoon
an elderly gentleman
dressed in a charcoal suit
sits at a bus stop

He leans on a cane
cranes forward
in anticipation of the bus

From the top
of his breast pocket
protrude half a dozen
silver-topped pens
that decorate his chest
like a veteran's medals

Today's bake...
I soaked the end of my last loaf in water overnight and added the resulting mush into the mix so no food waste!
It made the dough slightly more difficult to get right, and i was a little worried, but the results are very satisfactory indeed!
