“We did not rebel, we defended and maintained rights which we enjoyed and had neither forfeited nor sold.”

Commemorating Louis Riel today, the great Métis leader & defender of rights whose efforts continue to be misunderstood as "rebellion", but were really a remarkable story of resistance.

In @thewalrus.ca, I argue it's time we talk about what the US administration really is, and what that means for Canada's survival. thewalrus.ca/canada-is-be...

LinkedIn is really pushing a racist report by a Canadian think tank about Canadian immigration policy for me to read.

Your regular reminder that the single greatest threat to 🇪🇺integration & transatlantic security & prosperity is neither 🇨🇳, nor 🇷🇺, nor any other external threat, but rather the authoritarian calls coming from inside the house.
Puke. Marco Rubio praised Viktor Orbán’s leadership as “essential” to US interests, saying Donald Trump is “deeply committed” to the Hungarian premier’s success ahead of critical parliamentary elections. giftarticle.ft.com/giftarticle/...

Again, when folks say this 2nd thing 👇, I have no idea why they believe this is case.

Xi Jinping is 72, just purged the military, & the amount people in 🇪🇺 & elsewhere know about 🇨🇳 internal politics, relative to what they know about 🇺🇸 domestic politics/Trump, is miniscule 🤷‍♂️

Yeah, those who want Ru to win in Ukraine or at least don’t want to do anything to contain its expansionism in Europe always use this sophism.
After AOC spoke in Munich, I told @wsj.com: “Some of her allies on the left are already asking how her vision of maintaining military alliances to stop authoritarian aggression leaves room for controlling Pentagon spending, avoiding future wars and shifting defense burdens to allies and partners.”
Europeans Quietly Press U.S. Lawmakers for Clues on the Midterms
While the main focus of the Munich Security Conference was on the alliance, top leaders wanted to know all about November.

Marco Rubio didn't mention Russia or the Ukraine war in his speech on European security. Not once in his prepared remarks.

But he did push a racial/religious supremacist version of Western civilization and chastise them for immigration.

Basically the same speech as Hegseth, less boorishly phrased.
The Rubio speech really is appalling, and if you haven’t read it yet, you should.

Yeah that was weird as hell. I’ll be writing about it tomorrow.
Also, I'm not sure he has clearly implied out loud before [checks notes] 'Europe needs to resume colonisation and imperial expansionism without guilt and then we'll get along with you fine', but I think I caught that. Maybe mine ears do play tricks on me.

PAGING WAB KINEW AND SCOTT GILLINGHAM
I had trouble understanding why any Canadians opposed a firearms buy-back plan — a simple way to have fewer weapons available to potential mass shooters without further ownership restrictions.

Now I REALLY don’t understand

This is why we must continue to keep teaching about gender in all out IR courses.
Again, the unifying 🧵 about this WH’s foreign policy is not realism or neo-royalism. It’s the extension of sexual assault/predation to IR. If they think you’re their macho pal, they’ll respect your sovereignty. If they don’t, they’ll try to violate you & humiliate you. Epstein-ism, if you like.
One of the most distinctive aspects of this WH’s foreign policy is to combine an extremely ecumenical Westphalianism about broad regime type (which I’m fine with TBF) with an extremely precise set of ideological preferences about who should win elections in the Western Hemisphere & Western Europe.

R.F. Mengele Jr's numbers should be WAY worse.
The RFK number seems like a massive failure of the media to explain what RFK is doing to our public health system and how catastrophic it will be
Net favorability of how Americans view
Trump: -18
Hegseth: -15
Vance: -14
Rubio: -10
RFK Jr: -4

Colour me surprised.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said she does not agree with the German chancellor’s assessment of the influence of MAGA culture in Europe.
Meloni says she disagrees with Merz on culture wars
Italian prime minister was a notable absence from the Munich Security Conference.

New and fascinating from Bernard Harcourt.
I just posted an essay on Marco Rubio’s speech this morning at the Munich Security Conference 2026. It is an extraordinary historical fabulation about Western civilization and needs to be dissected to get the full import of these Hegelian times. Read here: open.substack.com/pub/bernardh...

It doesn’t say it as directly, but at its core all of this stuff is Calhounism and Dred Scott: An assertion that the Declaration of Independence and U.S. Constitution were conceived in purely racial terms and to include exclusively the white race.

We don't prosecute fare evasion in Winnipeg, so it would be misleading to publish it. We *do* prosecute criminal assault charges against drivers and passengers, and an overwhelming share of those assaults are committed by people who aren't paying a fare.
