Seems like I always start noticing them around the time I’m feeling sad about chanterelles and other fall mushrooms tapering off and they cheer me up!

Same. Dog people behavior became so much more infuriating for me when I had kids… giant dog knocks my kid to the ground and half the time the owner has a comment like "it's ok, she's friendly! Just excited!" Kid is clearly scared. How do you think this is ok?

Would you know anything about the classification/naming of these? I've been calling these Sarcomyxa serotina, and after seeing your post and doing a little Googling I'm a little confused about the preferred or correct name.

I've almost entirely stopped "nitpicking" in code review, but one nit-picky thing I've held onto is avoiding meaningless implicit return values from arrow functions that perform side effects. React 19 release notes include a great example of why I think this very common pattern should be avoided.
