And there wouldn’t be a need to go to bunkers. It wouldn’t be an apocalyptic event on earth itself
For LEO a cascade would need to be rapid for it to persist. Otherwise debris would start to degrade and the growth rate would drop stagnating it
Yes, it means essentially that a cascade would mean more and more objects being impacted every day.
Instruments would see a cascade. It would also be apparent when multiple satellites start dying randomly very fast
It’s unlikely there would be a meteor shower. Debris would enter way more frequently
You’d need to really track spaceflight closely. The press would immediately jump on it though

Obviously they’d be dramatic as fuck but they’d love the bad news money farm it would create
He knows SpaceX was dealt a bad hand with HLS and is pushing a narrative to boost a proposal for traditional contractors to get a cost+ contract
I mean that’s not actually what was said. Duffy is planning on opening the Artemis 3 contract to more providers

Not cutting SpaceX’s contract. Duffy is also playing political games here
An actual cascade. As in a collision or event that creates debris that then impacts other objects creating more debris that exponentially increases

It wouldn’t be subtle
That would be a disaster for US spaceflight. Period
The debris here is from a Chinese rocket stage that they left on orbit to decay. It has nothing to do with Kessler syndrome and isn’t a sign that there’s a cascade
SpaceX also wasn’t given enough time. Period.

The OIG and GAO repeatedly stated this. Procurement was way too late and delays because of HLS will still be nothing compared to what delays (and billions in overruns) SLS and Orion have seen
The alternative Duffy is being pulled into is by traditional defence contractors based on a bullshit claim they can get it done in 30 months with a cost+ contract (one where they are paid EVERYTHING including any over runs and delays they cause)
SpaceX gets fixed cost, milestone based contracts. They literally cannot milk them

They get a set award (any overruns and delays need to paid for by SpaceX), have to invest a minimum 50% of dev themselves (for HLS it was way more than this) and are legally tied to their contract
It’s Chinese. Because unlike SpaceX and most western launchers

China doesn’t care about being good neighbours on orbit and will happily leave stages on orbit for not valid reason
SpaceX actually invests heavily on debris mitigation too
Lecturer needs educating on the very fruitful relationship both have had over the past decade+
Or, idk, done procurement at a reasonable time instead of leaving it till the last minute
