Stunning "First Look" image by @vrubinobs.bsky.social of the galaxy NGC 4261 + neighbours. The image sharpness and depth is amazing plus the ability to see the diffuse light, e.g. stellar umbrellas caused by galaxy interactions. #astronomy #extragalactic #AstroSci * noirlab.edu/public/image...

Optical images from the Dark Energy Survey (DES) are amazing, ... so much happening in the galaxy group. Exploring the sky never gets boring 🤩 #extragalactic #AstroSci #astronomy #galaxies

GOLD and SILVER!!
Australia’s Nicola Olyslagers has won a second straight high jump Indoor World Championships Title, while Eleanor Patterson made it an Aussie 1,2 to win silver.

Both cleared 1.97m, but Olyslagers’ flawless jumps at earlier heights saw her prevail.
Amazing world indoor high jump competition - some massive jumps by Nicola 🤩 Congratulations Nic No 1 🥇, Eleanor No 2 🥈and Yaroslava No 3 🥉 Bring on more High Jump 🔥🔥🔥 #athletics #highjump
🔥 WOW Gold & Silver 🔥

How amazing - Nicola Olyslagers & Eleanor Patterson make another mark in history

They share gold & silver on global championship podium - the only ever time this happened for Australia was in 1968 when Maureen Caird & Pam Kilborn did same in 80mH

🔥 sensational 🔥
Wow 😮 ... lots going on here. Stellar shells and tails around IC 3091, clearly a galaxy merger in progress. #astronomy #AstroSci #extragalactic
Cool science: A giant X-shaped galaxy with a monster black hole as its engine * theconversation.com/experts-solv... (from May 2020) #extragalactic #astronomy #radioastronomy
The radio core is indeed at the location of the optical galaxy. One-sided cometary radio tails - here twisted like a corkscrew - form when the galaxy ploughs through the intracluster medium. The bubble-shaped old part of the tail is likely the result of a head-on collision with a shock front.
The Corkscrew Galaxy - it's full length is nearly 1 Mpc. #extragalactic #astronomy #radioastronomy
Snap :) See my recent paper with @sunmish.bsky.social @elenchically.bsky.social et al. on the Corkscrew Galaxy and A3627 cluster environment ui.adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2024MNRA...
Who likes Giant Radio Galaxies (GRGs) ? Here my latest ASKAP collection (incl. two candidates), all larger than 1 Mpc with angular sizes >5 arcmin. It's a zoo !! Paper ready for submission, comments welcome. #radioastronomy #extragalactic #astronomy #galaxies
Nearby galaxy pair NGC 7682 (left) and NGC 7679 (right) in a cosmic dance. Optical colour-composite image from the Dark Energy Survey DES-DR10. #astronomy #extragalactic #galaxies
Another stunning image from the Dark Energy Survey (DES) DR10 release. This is NGC 4495 which is surrounded by numerous spokes and shells appearing like a faint but sharply defined halo. Looks like multiple "umbrellas" from galaxy merger events. #astronomy #extragalactic
Faint stellar tails / bridges / filaments in the NGC 128 galaxy group as revealed in the Dark Energy Survey (DES) DR10, overexposed here to highlight stars outside the galaxy disks. These galaxies are interacting, and NGC 128 is counter-rotating (Chung+ 2012). #astronomy #extragalactic
Three of the spiral galaxies shown are part of the famous Grus Quartet which is rich in neutral hydrogen gas (black and blue contours from ATCA and Parkes, respectively). Hydrogen bridges between galaxies as well as tidal tails highlight their interaction history.
Merry Christmas everyone :)

Congrats Manisha Caleb, @elenchically.bsky.social @astromelow.bsky.social and many others 🤩 Great to see this ASKAP discovery being highlighted here ! #radioastronomy #astronomy
The winner of cover of the year for 2024 is the September cover connected to the Caleb, Lenc et al. paper! www.nature.com/articles/s41... Congratulations to all involved, particularly Carl Knox @ozgrav.bsky.social and @csiro.bsky.social #NAstroCoverComp #astronomy
4/5 GALEX ultra-violet (UV) data show star formation (SF) in the disk of M83 as well as its outskirts. These types of large UV-disks are referred as XUV disks, where dense clumps of neutral hydrogen pinpoint SF in the disk outskirts. #astronomy #extragalactic #radioastronomy

René Magritte's "The Kiss" at the NSW Art Gallery - amazing exhibition, loved strolling the rooms and reading about the artist and his works * www.artgallery.nsw.gov.au/whats-on/exh... #bluesky
3/5 The hydrogen envelope of spiral galaxies typically extends well beyond their stellar disks. M83 is a great example of this as shown below. There is a lot happening in the outer HI disk, likely evidence of interactions with neighbours. #radioastronomy #extragalactic #astronomy #spiral #galaxies
2/5 Deep optical images of M83 (NGC 5236) by Robert Gendler (left) and David Malin (right, 1987) reveal the faint stellar light including a southern spur and northern stream. The latter is likely an accreted dwarf galaxy. * David Malin's image archive: images.datacentral.org.au/malin/DEEP/153
