Frances Perkins (April 10, 1880 – May 14, 1965) watched 146 women burn to death because factory owners locked the exits. Twelve years later, she became the most powerful woman in America. And the first woman in a presidential Cabinet. Born in Boston, she studied, she studied physics at Mount Holyoke College. Her professor took students to tour factories along the Connecticut River. Frances saw exhausted girls younger than herself in abysmal conditions, inspiring her to earn a master's degree at Columbia University in economics and sociology, writing her thesis on malnutrition in Hell's Kitchen. By 1910, she was Executive Secretary of the New York Consumers League, investigating factories, documenting violations, pushing for reform: clean bakeries; safe exits; maximum working hours. She testified before legislative committees, telling powerful men their factories were killing people. Then came the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory tragedy on March 25, 1911. She watched young women jump from 9-floor windows because the factory owners had locked the doors to prevent "theft" and "unauthorized breaks." Most of the 146 workers who died were immigrant women and girls, as young as 14. Within weeks, Frances was appointed to the committee investigating the fire. She didn't just write a report. She rewrote New York's labor laws from the ground up: Fire exits—unlocked, accessible, clearly marked; Maximum occupancy limits; Sprinkler systems; Regular safety inspections; 54-hour maximum workweek; One day off per week. New York passed the laws. Within a decade, American workplaces had been transformed. In 1933, Franklin D. Roosevelt asked Frances to join his Cabinet as Secretary of Labor. She was 53 years old. Frances agreed, but only on her terms: A 40-hour workweek; A minimum wage; Abolition of child labor; Unemployment insurance; Old-age pensions. Roosevelt said they were impossible demands. Frances Ellen Watkins Harper (1825–1911) was a pioneering African American poet, lecturer, and activist whose work advanced abolition, women’s rights, and social justice in 19th-century America. Born free in Baltimore to educated parents, Harper used her powerful writing and oratory skills to challenge slavery and racial discrimination. Harper published numerous volumes of poetry, such as Poems on Miscellaneous Subjects (1854), blending themes of faith, freedom, and the fight against injustice. She also became a prominent speaker for the Underground Railroad, temperance, and suffrage movements. In 1866, Harper helped found the National Association of Colored Women, working tirelessly to improve education and civil rights for Black women. Throughout her life, she toured widely, inspiring audiences with her calls for equality, compassion, and unity.
