I really enjoyed this last interactive session on the metaverse of ICU learning with Elena Sancho, Eleonora Balzani, and Pedro Povoa!

The quest for knowledge can go through many pathways. Probably the best is to integrate different modalities, adjusting them to specific needs.

Leo Celi gave a powerful talk about how to integrate AI in medical education: it requires redesigning of legacy systems.

We can’t simply rearrange the furniture after the Titanic has started sinking: end the Publish or Perish culture!

A system that can‘t be fixed with Al, can’t be fixed with Al.

Massimiliano Greco introduced wearable devices.

They come with challenges:
- Accuracy and validation
- Cost effectiveness
- Alarm fatigue
- Data visualization

But also with perspectives!

On the final day of #ESICMInnovation Derek Angus talked about how AI could or should change medical education.

We should probably reconsider the core curriculum of medical learning.
Who is going to teach it? We need experts from other fields, such as statisticians and ethicists.

Nicole Hunfeld tackled pharmacogenomics!

We all tend to be oblivious of the genetic profile of our patients. In reality having the info about their cytochromes can really make a difference in their care.

A great example of the need to integrate different profiles in the ICU team.

Ari Ercole analyzed the neuromonitoring systems available.

He focused on the need to contextualize the data: the duration of insults, autoregulatory states…

You can now identify the optimal autoregulatory status for each patient.

The real future will be monitoring the doctor!

Kirsten Colpaert taught how AI-powered alarm management can reduce fatigue and
improve patient safety!

We need to educate patients, clinicians and families to better integrate the right AI model into our care.

We, as humans, are training AI to have biases.

Second day here at the #ESICMInnovation!

The discussion is thriving around the concept of sustainability in four dimensions: environmental, economic, social, and operational.

If done correctly, it probably leads to a change in the structure of care!

During the second part, Elie Azoulay gives us the basis for ethical reasoning while interacting with AI.

We move around the concepts of fairness and truthfulness, balance of beneficience, maleficience and injustice.

The first half of the day introduced crucial concepts such as the value of lobbying and the need to not fear innovation but rather understand how and in which phases it will impact our jobs. Of course, there is no equity and no evolution without the right intention.
