Last fall, 7,700+ salmon swam past the former Iron Gate Dam site, accessing spawning habitats that were blocked for over a century. This year salmon are making it past the Keno and Link River Dams, into Upper Klamath Lake in Oregon.

We had the opportunity to collaborate with Friends of the Dunes and Orleans Elementary on a field trip to the North Coast. We explored Dunes along the Humboldt County coastline. Students learned about the coastal dune habitat and ecosystem, ongoing restoration, and the impacts of invasive species.

One year ago today, the last remnants of Iron Gate Dam were removed from the Klamath River. With the other dams already removed, this marked the end of Klamath Dam removal. In the year since we have seen remarkable improvements to water quality and river health.

Last Friday, Governor Gavin Newsom signed California AB 263. The bill, which Assemblymember Chris Rogers introduced on behalf of the Karuk Tribe, Yurok Tribe, and California Coastkeeper Alliance, extends emergency water regulations for key Klamath River tributaries, the Scott and Shasta Rivers.

Last week, the SCS Ed team was honored to co-facilitate an Orleans Elementary field trip to Crater Lake, OR. Some highlights of the trip included swimming in Crater Lake, walking along the headwaters of the Rogue River, and, of course, the s’mores.

Last week, SCS hosted our first public beach hike of the school year in Trinidad, CA, with Friends of the Dunes. We met many great Cal Poly Humboldt students and learned about the current work of their NAS's Food Sovereignty lab, as well as the traditional foods of the North Coast of California.

Sacramento, California — Yesterday the California State Water Resources Control Board cancelled workshop dates scheduled for next week that were intended to allow public comment on the proposed update to the failed 30-year-old Bay-Delta Plan.

Later afternoon yesterday the California State Water Resources Control Board canceled the Sept. 24th and 25th hearings on the Bay Delta Plan. They have indicated they may reschedule for December.
