I think him leaving gave them the money for Corbin, and the other players they brought on that year. I also think he was a cancer in the clubhouse. Could you imagine him doing that whole "trucker gear" thing that Eaton and Kendrick were doing? And giving Stras hugs? And "Baby Shark"?
